Car seats may save lives, but once you get into booster seats, they can be a pain. That was my experience, anyway, when trying to travel with my three children who are less than two years apart in age. The booster seats were heavy, slid around on the seat and took up more space than an adult, making it a very tight squeeze in the back. I’m talking about with just one booster seat; forget about using two or three. In addition, my kids hated them because they weren’t comfortable, so it was always a challenge to get everyone buckled up. Apparently Grainne Kelly shared my pain. The Irish mother of two went a step further and created something radically different called the BubbleBum booster seat. It’s a soft, inflatable, bright purple and green seat that you also can fold flat to carry with you on trips for rental cars, taxis, carpooling, etc. The BubbleBum cushion is easy to inflate and is super comfortable, since it is made from memory foam. (Yes, I tested it even though my “bum” spilth over since the seat is narrow for a child.) It’s covered with a durable material similar to what you find on life vests. And it has a webbing that holds the cushion in place. According to the press release, the seat is made entirely of energy-absorbing materials to soak up the energy of the crash and passed all standards inflated and deflated. For carting around three kids, the BubbleBum includes belt positioning clips in place of arm rests so it’s possible to fit three boosters across the back seat of a car, minivan or SUV.

I tested the BubbleBum out on my 6-year-old grandson, and he loved it. As soon as I pulled the booster seat out of the bag, he was on it, since it looks like a cool toy of some kind. It’s nice to know something that looks good can be safe, too. The BubbleBum not only meets all U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and European Standards, but it’s in the winner’s circle selected by the PTPA (Parent Tested Parent Approved) and the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacture Awards). BubbleBum also recently was announced the IHS (Insurance Institute of Highway Safety) “Best Bet” in its booster seat evaluation report, where they’ve branded BubbleBum as one of the best for safety.

The bottom line: This is a no-brainer if you are looking for a booster seat. I wish Grainne had thought of this earlier. The BubbleBum Booster Seat is safe, comfortable, portable and affordable at $39.99. It’s sold on Target.com, BabiesRUS.com and www.bubblebum.us.
