On-The-Go-Girl !!!!!

BEST NEW INVENTION FOR PARENTS

If you have young children who are still in booster seats, then you are going to love this! The product is called the BubbleBum Booster Seat. It’s portable, foldable and …deflatable. Yes, you read that correctly.

As a mom who loves to travel to NYC with her kids, I desperately needed an alternative like this one.  Before this revolutionary booster, my other options were carrying the traditional, heavy, non-flexible booster or not using one at all.

When I first saw this inflatable booster, I was weary about the safety of the product. However, the BubbleBum has met ALL US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and has also been tested and approved (in both its inflated and deflated states) to European Standards.

This booster is perfect for traveling, use in taxis and in cars with narrow back seats (so you can fit 3 across). Plus, it is easy to inflate.

Does The Bubble Bum Solve The Third Car Seat Dilemma?

bubble_bum_inflatable_booster.jpg

The Bubble Bum is the third inflatable European booster seat solution to surface here on Daddy Types. Is it finally the one that actually works well enough to use?

Frankly, I find it a bit extraordinary that the Bubble Bum meets EU R44.04 safety standards “in the deflated state,” and yet folds small enough to fit “in Granny’s glove compartment.”

[UPDATE FROM THE BUBBLE BUMS THEMSELVES: I emailed some followup questions, and the BubbleBum folks got right back to me. The EU standard has a "worst case scenario" component, which in this case, meant testing the seat deflated. Because the Bubble Bum also has memory foam, it retains sufficient volume even when punctured or deflated.

They also pointed out that a booster seat like the BubbleBum is not classified as a child restraint system, but a seat belt positioner [and so involves the use of the positioning clip, not just the seat]. The car’s own shoulder belt is the restraint system, obviously.]

But whatever, if a Bubble Bum actually does fit in between two traditional hard-shell booster or car seats, then they have solved one of the greatest parenting dilemmas this side of paid paternity leave: how to not buy a three-row vehicle.

[UPDATE FROM THE COMMENTS: Wow, is this true, it's only 13x13 inches? You could fit that almost anywhere! ]

That they also make far-flung rental car use easier is just a bonus. That they compound your guilt for not using a car seat in a taxi is, well, let’s just call it a win for child safety.

BubbleBum in ‘Shine’ from Yahoo

Hi Buddies…..check out ‘Shine’ from Yahoo which recently featured BubbleBum

Ask any parent and they will tell you there are not enough hours in a day-or limbs on a body-to keep up with the demands of raising children. However, there are some amazing gadgets available to help make the day’s challenges a little bit easier. Beyond the basics like Aquaphor and exersaucers (both essentials!), we present you with six inventions that are parents’ lifesavers.

 Bubble Bum

Bubble Bum car seat

Any parent whose kids ride in booster seats know the saga of pulling out the seat and sending it off for play dates and carpools. But most don’t know about the downright amazing Bubble Bum, which is a safe, incredibly compact alternative to the clunky booster. It fits in any kid’s book bag or backpack, inflates for use, and easily deflates for simple storage. We honestly can’t say enough good things about this lifesaver. ($39.99 at Amazon)

SassyCityMom: BubbleBum Booster Seat…A MUST-HAVE

By Michele Costanza…bringing you a humorous view on consumer topics in an all-too-serious world

.
I’ve used more kiddie products over the years than I care to think about. From bottles, to toys, to butt-cream. Yeah, it’s rarely glamorous, but when you find something that works, you stick to it like glue and tell all your friends. Word of mouth is everything in this playpen because the competition for Mamma’s pocketbook is FIERCE.

One area that hasn’t been particularly innovative in the last few years is the Booster Seat market. Sure, you can always get more EXPENSIVE, but can you get more FUNCTIONAL?

The answer is YES, and the company is BubbleBum. (Let’s just say the name is MEMORABLE…)

What’s different about it? How about the fact that it’s INFLATABLE. Which means it DE-flates and folds into a small, portable sack, easily transported in a backpack, or stored in the seat pockets of your car for those unexpected play dates. Beats using up valuable trunk space with hard-sided, unwieldy sculpted plastic, right? YES, I know you’re already envisioning myriad uses for this little gem.

BubbleBum booster seat

This brilliant product has been burning it up in the awards department for its innovation and practicality. I’d call this ingenious product a MUST BUY for every parent and caregiver, not as your primary booster, but as your back-up/travel/extra booster that we all undoubtedly will need.

Of course, I also know you’re wondering if it’s a fully-approved booster, and the answer is YES.

According to the BubbleBum website:

BubbleBum has been tested and approved to both the ECE R44.04 standard and crash tested to meet the USA FMVSS213 standards. As with all car seats, read the instructions carefully and email us or call us if you have any concerns!

One of my favorite things about the BubbleBum is the fact that it’s soft-sided, which means you can easily squeeze THREE kids in boosters across a small backseat, such as a Prius. You KNOW that’s a big deal. I can’t tell you the number of Prius owners who lament the fact that they can’t fit three kids in the carpool…well, here’s your solution.

SassyCityMom gives the BubbleBum a BIG Thumbs UP for innovation and practicality, and at $39.99 online it’s affordable. (also available on Amazon.com for the same price)

Here are a couple little hints from my 7 yr-old son’s experience with the BubbleBum…..

1. Read the directions carefully to inflate the BubbleBum correctly.

2. When the child enters the vehicle, they will sit on the booster, pulling the seatbelt low and tight across their lap, clicking the belt securely into the buckle. With the BubbleBum, the child will then need to insert the nylon belt into the guiding-clips located on either side of the booster.

3. We found the best way to insert the belt into the guiding-clips was to fold the nylon belt in half, like a taco, to slip it into the opening. To remove the belt, simply fold it the same way and slip it out.  I mention this because we had trouble getting the belt OUT of the guiding-clips the first few times. With practice, getting in and out of the BubbleBum should only take a couple seconds.

BubbleBum wins The Parent Tested Parent Approved Media award

Kids Today Staff — Kids Today, 11/1/2011 12:18:43 PM

Inflatable booster seat manufacturer BubbleBum has been named a winner in the Parent Tested Parent Approved Media Awards.

PTPA Media’s mission is to discover and appraise new products designed for children and families. Hundreds of manufacturers submitted their products and services for evaluation based on value, functionality, quality and appeal by over 40,000 volunteer parent testers.
“We are thrilled to be honored by PTPA with this award.” said Melissa Farrell, Vice President of Sales for BubbleBum. “We are excited that PTPA has recognized Bubblebum’s dedication to safety when it comes to traveling with kids.”

BubbleBum is the world’s first inflatable car booster seat for kids aged 4-11. The BubbleBum comes in a convenient carrying bag, and has shoulder belt positioning clips in place of arm rests. It easily fits in small spaces, making it more comfortable for three kids to sit in the back seat. It weighs approximately one pound, and deflates after use allowing it to be stored in a backpack, flight bag, trunk or even a large purse.
BubbleBum was founded by Safekids USA Certified CPST Grainne Kelly from Northern Ireland who, like many other parents, was appalled by the lack of car booster seats available from car rental desks even when booked in advance.

The first inflatable booster seat was also recently named a “Best Bet” by IIHS, as well as a winner of the 2011 JPMA Innovation Award.

Trekaroo Review BubbleBum

Many thanks to Sharlene at Trekaroo for the recent review

Bubble Bum Booster Seats- ideal for traveling families

by: Sharlene Earnshaw

Do you remember riding in a car seat as a kid? Neither do I! Most of us born in the seventies and early eighties were out of car seats and into lap belts as soon as we could walk. As a matter of fact, I have vivid memories of sitting in my dad’s lap and “helping” drive the car. With today’s advances in safety, those days are long gone and most kids will be sitting in booster seats until their age reaches double digits. As a mom, I am grateful for these advances and am happy to keep my children in a booster seat until they are 18 if it will protect them, but as a traveler, I have found booster seats to be a MAJOR PAIN! They are heavy, cumbersome, and yet another thing to lug through airports. Bubble Bum claimed that they had a booster seat that was inflatable, compact, and lightweight, making it perfect for travel. I decided I needed to check out the product for myself.

Before agreeing to review this product, my first concern was safety. After all, the reason my children sit in booster seats is because I want to prevent serious injury in the event of an accident. Thankfully, safety is also the primary concern of the designer of the Bubble Bum, Grainne Kelly, who is a mom herself. She designed a product that meets or exceeds all FMVSS213 safety standards set forth by the NHTSA as well as European regulations. As a matter of fact, Bubble Bum was recently named a “Best Bet” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety!
When our Bubble Bum arrived in its adorable little purple and green container, I was shocked. How on earth could a booster seat fit in such as small package? The padding for the seat is a combination of memory foam and air (courtesy of your lungs) and inflating the Bubble Bum is as easy as blowing up a balloon. Within 20 seconds I had the seat fully inflated and ready to use. Adjusting the shoulder strap took about 30 seconds as well and attaching the seatbelt to the booster was very easy. I was confident that I could do this anywhere! The seat is designed for children between 40lbs and 80lbs in weight and over the age of 4, making it a product that can be used for years to come.

Collapsing the seat was easy and it actually fits back into its carry bag easily- what a concept! My
daughter was comfortable and happy in the seat and I felt that she was very safe. The booster weighs only one pound and can easily be thrown into a carry-on or backpack and then pulled out to use in rental cars, taxis, and shuttles.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use
  • Narrow, allowing for three booster seats to be used in the same row
  • Unlike many products, actually fits back into its storage bag
  • Meets both US and European safety standards
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • No side impact protection
  • Spot clean only

The only reason why the Bubble Bum won’t become our everyday booster seat is because it doesn’t offer any side impact neck protection. The large booster seats in our car provide that protection until children reach a certain height, making them a better everyday option for now. That being said, I am 100% sold on this product. I will not be taking our old booster seats on any more airplane trips! Bubble Bum provides both safety and convenience in a wonderful lightweight package. Plus the price is right at only $39.99! I will definitely be buying a second Bubble Bum for my son and recommending this product to others.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary Bubble Bum in order to complete an unbiased review of this product. All opinions are my own.
