serious about safety

BubbleBum meets and exceeds all US Federal Motor Vehicle Standards FMVSS213 and the European Regulations EU R44/o4

Every parent wants their child to be safe. Here are some reasons why you should use a booster seat on EVERY journey with your child:

BubbleBum is a Belt Positioning Booster seat for children who meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Children between 40lbs and 100lbs in weight
  2. Children are over the age of 4,
  3. Children can sit for the entire journey without sitting on their knees

A booster seat must ONLY be used with a 3 point seat belt, this is a seat belt which goes across the lap and diagonally across the chest.

It has been proven that children in booster seats have approximately half the injury risk of children without the use of a booster seat, and in seatbelts alone. While head injuries are the most commonly injured body region for all restrained children, abdominal injuries are the second most common injury for belted children as a result of “seat-belt syndrome” injuries. Children who were restrained by booster seats showed a notable absence of abdominal injuries.

Please see our FAQ page for more specific questions. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to email us on [email protected]

Remember, your child’s safety is of paramount importance to us. No question is too silly. Our goal is to have ALL children protected!

American Academy of Ped Report

** Always keep your child in their 5 point harness seat until the upper weight limit.

*** Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Oct2009

BubbleBum can fit easily with any combination of cars seat as long as there are enough 3 point seat belts to restrain each and every child.

Some family cars have a 60/40 split in the rear seat which makes it very difficult to fit a conventional, bulky, rigid booster seat. BubbleBum solves this problem.

I got one for my daughter who is 8 yrs old and outgrew the other booster seat she was in. I knew we needed a side-less booster seat and this is it. She loves it and can use it until she reaches the max weight for it. It took a few days for her to get the belt through the red clips by herself quickly but now she's got it.

I just bought 2 seats. I have a corolla and it is a struggle to fit 3 in the back. This seat sets with inbetween the seatbelt with room to buckle up before I had to push and lift the seats after kids were in to buckle the belt. I can see already this will not be a problem! It saved me from having to spend $$ for a van.

I had my doubts as to their safety. That was before my 2014 Outback slid on black ice, rolled and we ended upside down on the guard rail. We were removed from the car and walked away from the accident. My 5 year old and 7 year old had BubbleBums booster seats.

The seat belt clips are very time consuming to get your child out of the car! It is really hard to get the seat belt out of the clips.

Is a BubbleBum safe?

BubbleBum has been tested and approved to both the ECE R44.04 standard and crash tested to meet the USA FMVSS213 standards. As with all car seats, read the instructions carefully and email us or call us if you have any concerns!

BubbleBum, why are you so good?

You do not need to buy a new car now when you have 3 children. BubbleBum fits neatly even in the smallest of seats if there is room for a child and a 3 point seat belt.

  • BubbleBum is lightweight, portable and durable so you can take it with you everywhere, including taxi rides and carpooling.
  • BubbleBum is cost effective.
  • BubbleBum is more comfortable as it is softer to sit on.
  • BubbleBum is colorful, funky and cool, it doesn’t look like a ‘baby seat’.
  • BubbleBum encourages independence in children to buckle up as they can reach the belt positioners.
  • BubbleBum encourages children to have a positive attitude toward car safety.
  • BubbleBum is a name that all kids love.
  • BubbleBum is more hygienic than using rented seats.

Do you come in other colors?

We have one color scheme at present which has been tested by 100 children. 98% of the children (equally mixed boys and girls) chose the color scheme. BubbleBum is now available in: purple and lime, black and silver, neon pink and neon yellow!

How do I inflate the BubbleBum and is it difficult?

The BubbleBum inflates in less than 30 seconds by blowing into the valve at the rear of the seat. When the seat has been inflated more than twice, it is even easier as the seat tries to self inflate. Be sure to close the valve when inflated and also when deflated.

Can a child inflate the BubbleBum?

It is not recommended that a child be held responsible for their own passenger safety. While a child would have the ability to inflate the seat, an adult should always ensure that the BubbleBum is fully inflated and that the valve is closed.

How can an inflatable seat be safe?

BubbleBum has used technology to create stability in the inflatable section. The inflatable bladder is made of a similar durable material as life rafts (not like a beachball) and the seat cover and webbing form an integral part of the structural integrity of the product.

What if my BubbleBum gets punctured?

Any car seat that has been damaged or involved in a crash should be replaced as there could be damage to the seat which would affect the performance of the seat in a crash. We have gained our approval R44.04 in the deflated state for piece of mind, but the seat should not be used if punctured.

Can I use a second hand or used Booster seat or is there an expiration date?

Only if you know the history of the seat and are confident that the seat has not been abused or involved in a crash. The expiration date for any car seat is maximum 6 years therefore check the age of the seat before use.

Will my BubbleBum deflate while my child is using it?

Your BubbleBum should not deflate during use. We have not found that change in temperature affects the pressure but we do not recommend that you expose any booster seat to extreme conditions for prolonged periods of time.

We test the product with 100lb weights for long periods of time to ensure that the BubbleBum has stamina and endurance!

What age should my child be to use a BubbleBum?

A child should meet ALL of the following requirements in order to use ANY booster seat:

  • Aged between 4 and 11 Weigh between 40-100lbs Height up to 57inches or when child’s ears are above the back of the vehicle seat.
  • It is recommended that you keep your child in the lowest Group car seat until the maximum weight allowance for that restraint before moving up to the next Group.

Can my child ride in the front seat on their BubbleBum?

It is recommended that children remain in the rear seating position until at least the age of 13 years old. A child is twice as likely to be injured in a frontal crash when seated in the front row seating.

Why can’t I just use a cushion? Surely it is the same thing?

BubbleBum is designed to position the seatbelt correctly in the event of a crash and prevent submarining of the child. A cushion will slip out from under the child potentially causing greater injury to the child by submarining. A BubbleBum holds the seatbelt in position using positioning clips and has been crash tested for this purpose.

What if my BubbleBum goes down or loses air pressure?

You will be pleased to know that BubbleBum has been crash tested in its deflated state. The BubbleBum should always be inflated for use and if it is soft, simply top up with air. Never use a damaged booster seat. If you have concerns please email us on [email protected]

What size is BubbleBum?

I am 13 X 13 X 4.5 ins when inflated.

My child is very tall and their ears are above the back of the seat but the lap belt does not fit. I have no headrest in the car, can I use Bubblebum even if it is deflated?

It is not recommended or suggested that the Bubblebum be used in the deflated state. The testing in the deflated state is to prove that the seat would perform if punctured during a crash, not to suggest using when deflated.

When riding in a backless booster, like the Bubble Bum, it is important that the vehicle seat – either the seat back or the head rest – comes up to at least the top of the child’s ears in order to protect against whiplash. When the vehicle seat does not come up high enough to protect the child from whiplash, the child can not safely use a backless booster and must use a high back booster.

My child is 3 and weighs 42lbs. Can he use the BubbleBum?

While we recommend that your child uses a five point harness car seat until the upper weight limit of the seat, your child is within the weight range to use a BubbleBum. It is much safer for your child to ride on a BubbleBum than in a seatbelt alone.

Your child must be at least 40lbs before using a booster seat. Please do not hurry to move up to the next group of car seats for your child.

What is the preferred age range for BubbleBum?

We feel that the ideal age to start using a BubbleBum is 4 years upwards. This is because children under this age are more likely to be under the 40lbs weight requirement. However, a 3 year old will be safer on a BubbleBum than in a seatbelt alone.

Someone told me that it is just as safe to use a seat belt alone as to use a booster seat….is this true?

No. A backless booster is designed to spread the forces of a crash over the strongest parts of the child’s body using the car seat belt. The seat belt in a car is designed to be used for adults and a child is not a small adult. Their weight is proportioned differently and their internal organs risk serious injury if the seatbelt is incorrectly positioned across the soft abdominal area. They also risk submarining if not securely positioned in the car seat belt. The greatest incidence of abdominal injury is among children 4 to 8 years old. According to researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, for children 4 to 7 years, booster seats reduce injury risk by 59% compared to seat belts alone.

Can I use it onboard an Airplane?

No booster seat can be used with a lap belt therefore they cannot be used in an airplane. However, BubbleBum can be carried on board as hand luggage as it has no sharp edges and poses no risk to other passengers.

Having your BubbleBum in your carry-on luggage comes in handy for the rental car or taxi ride once you have landed.

The seat belt is sitting across my child’s face, can I put it under her arm?

Under NO circumstances is it safe to place the seat belt under the child’s arm or behind the child. If the seat belt does not fit snugly, your child is not old enough yet to use a backless booster seat.

Can the BubbleBum withstand high temperatures?

While your BubbleBum can withstand high temperatures, we recommend that it is not left in extreme temperatures for prolonged periods of time.

How do I get the air back out when I want to store my BubbleBum?

A helpful tip is to position the BubbleBum on a flat, firm surface taking care to remove any sharp objects. Open the valve and roll the BubbleBum to expel air. When you are happy that you can fit it back into the bag, close the valve and it is ready for storage.

Is the cover washable? Can I remove it?

The cover should not be removed as it forms an integral part of the performance of the seat. It can be surface washed with a mild detergent and air dried. Do not iron the cover. Do not tumble dry.

Where is the safest place for my child to sit?

The safest place depends on each car. Frontal airbags should not be used even with a booster seat as they can deploy at a speed of 200mph. Lap belts should not be used with booster seats. The rear seat, centre should be the safest place, but it depends on the type of seat and the car itself. Booster seats should never be used in a rear facing vehicle seat, side facing vehicle seat or a jump seat.

What is a proper booster seat fit?

  1. Sit with hips back against the vehicle seat with knees bending comfortably at the front edge of the seat.
  2. Keep the lap belt low and tight on hips.
  3. Place shoulder belt across the mid-chest and shoulder.
  4. Ensure that a booster seat is secured in the vehicle when not in use as it can become a missile in a crash and cause injury to the other occupants.

Why should my child use a Booster Seat?

When children outgrow their forward facing seat (usually around 40-100lbs) they should ride in booster seats in the back seat until the vehicle seat belt fits properly (lap belt should lie across the bony part of the pelvis/hips and the shoulder belt across the chest, never the face or throat). According to CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia) data, belt positioning booster seats are more than twice as effective in reducing risk of injury when compared with seat belt alone.

Children should use a booster seat until the vehicle seat belt fits correctly, which is usually when they reach 4 feet 9 inches.
